How Old Is King Edward Hotel

The King Edward Hotel in Toronto is almost 100 years old! It was originally built in 1903 by Mr George Gooderham – a wealthy businessman and developer.

He wanted to build a luxurious hotel that would stand out among other luxury hotels in Toronto.

At the time, the King Edwards was not just a hotel. It was an exclusive destination where gentlemen enjoyed port and cigars in the grand ballrooms while ladies sipped tea and danced in the elegant sitting rooms.

The original plan called for the construction of a 16 story tower. However, due to financial difficulties, only 9 stories were completed.

In 1921, an 18-storey addition was constructed. The upper floors contained a social venue, The Crystal Ballroom, which was named for its impressive crystal fixtures. This stylish venue quickly gained popularity as the place to see and to be seen.

Today, The Omni King Edward continues to preserve the legacy of the “King Eddy”. We cherish this iconic jewel and strive to restore and preserve a regal icon of Toronto’s history.
